The mission of the Veterans Defense Project is:

1. To conduct and support education, research, and informational activities to increase public awareness of issues effecting military veterans in the criminal justice system;

2. To promote the effective legal representation of military veterans charged with criminal offenses; and

3. To promote the rehabilitation of criminally-involved veterans.

Ryan Christian Else is a criminal defense attorney at the Law Office of Brockton D. Hunter P.A. Ryan served in the Army National Guard as an infantryman from 1998 to 2006, reaching the rank of Sergeant, and was deployed to Kosovo in 2003 and 2004.  Ryan went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from American University in Washington D.C. with a B.S. in International Relations.  In May 2011, he graduated from the University of St. Thomas School of Law where he served as President of the Military Law Society and clerked for Brock Hunter.  Ryan’s legal career has been dedicated to advocating for veterans’ rights in the criminal justice system. In September 2013, the Minnesota Humanities Center honored Ryan for his commitment to the Minnesota veteran community with the Veterans’ Voices Award.  Ryan also currently serves as the Executive Director of the Veterans Defense Project, and as a facilitator for the Toward a More Perfect Union: Talking About the Constitution project with the Minnesota Humanities Center.

Joshua London, Esq., was brought on with the VDP after proving himself during the difficult editing process in creating The Attorney's Guide to Defending Veterans in Criminal Court. Joshua received his Juris Doctor from the University of St. Thomas School of Law in 2014 and was licensed to practice in Minnesota after passing the bar exam on his first attempt.  During law school, Mr. London served as a Law Clerk with the Law Office of Brockton D. Hunter, P.A.  and now serves as an Associate Attorney with the firm.  Mr. London serves as the Operations Officer of the Veterans Defense Project, a non-profit organization founded to advocate for the vigorous legal defense of military veterans facing criminal charges.  In his position, Mr. London played an essential role in editing and publishing the legal treatise, The Attorney’s Guide to Defending Veterans in Criminal Court, a comprehensive manual to the art and science of defending criminally involved combat veterans with PTSD, TBI, substance abuse, or other service-related disorders.  This treatise brings together preeminent experts from the fields of law, medicine, social work, psychology, and psychiatry to provide practitioners with the knowledge and tools to provide effective, vigorous representation of veteran-defendants.

While in law school, he also served as a certified student attorney with the Ramsey County Public Defender's Office in St. Paul, Minnesota and was the President of The University of St. Thomas’s Jewish Law Students Association.  Joshua was on the St. Thomas William E. McGee Civil Rights and Evan A. Evans Constitutional Law Moot Court Teams, and was on the Dean’s List for Trial Advocacy in his final year at St. Thomas.  His article, Why Are We Killing Veterans?, will be published in the University of St. Thomas Law Journal.
